The Redemption of Callie and Kayden Sorensen Jessica 9780751552614 Books
My Rating: 5 starsThis book continues the story of Callie and Kayden where it left off. The heartbreaking journey these two go through as they face up to their past is one you want to be a part of and one I love to read. This book is filled with so much love and redemption, despite being surrounded by pain and anguish. PLEASE NOTE: Some spoilers from book one in this series to follow.
My thoughts:
I am constantly drawn back into this series due to the writing of Jessica Sorensen. The characters that she has created are so dynamic and compelling and every step that they take, I just want to hold their hand and hug them. Her writing is gorgeous and the way the words form and spill off the page is so wonderful. You just read some quotes and are overwhelmed by the beauty they have in them. I love that the chapters are formed clearly but don’t drag on or seem unnecessary. This series is my favourite out of all the books I have read of hers.
This book picks up Callie and Kayden where we left them. After fighting Caleb for what he did to Callie, Kayden was attacked by his father and then answered the pain in the way he does, by self-harming. Callie discovering this, has to deal with the pain of knowing that Kayden kept this from her and the fact that she can’t see him. Together they have to work together to move past their pain and take a step towards healing.
This book is so full of drama when you think about it, but it is done in a really great way that it is not overwhelmingly dramatic. The journey that observe between Kayden and Callie is so honest and raw that you spend the whole book just wanting them to be happy! This book tackles a lot of issues of what happens when family deserts you, what to do when you’re trying to heal, how to ask for help, when to ask for help and heaps more. I love that Callie and Kayden don’t just get better straight away, but make a decision to be better and face their demons head on.
There are so many parts of this book I love. I love that Luke and Seth support Callie and Kayden by taking them away from the crap their lives are full of. I love that they challenge them to face their issues, but don’t do it in a way that is overwhelming or harmful. I like that the four of them going out and drinking is a way that they cope together with everything that is happening. I like that the drama is real drama, real issues. I love that Seth and Callie dance and she is super relaxed around him. I love that Seth is defensive for Callie but can see that Kayden is important to her. I just love the friendships and support shown in this book.
This book is satisfying. Callie and Kayden are so in love and struggle with being allowed to be happy and I like seeing their arc throughout this book. I like that it’s not all perfect and that it’s messy and stuffed up. I love seeing them fall into each other and lean on one another, particularly as they reach the end and face some issues. The book ends in a sweet way, while having some cliff hanger components.
Just writing this review makes me want to pick up the book again and read it so if that’s not a recommendation, I don’t know what is.
I have zero issues with this book.
Recommended for: Contemporary YA readers. If you love Colleen Hoover, Jessica Sorensen or other styles like they write, you will love this book!
Quotes (Spoiler Free):
“There is something about someone trusting you enough with their secrets that it makes it easier to trust them. It’s like they’re opening their heart and in return yours should open up to them, too.”
“But I trusted him once and I decide to do it again. I just pray to God he doesn’t shove me down and break me, because I’m already in too many pieces and I just don’t know how much more breaking I can take.”
“No, but I've never been one for wise ideas," he says. "I believe in irrational, fleeting decisions that keep life interesting. And life needs to be interesting because we've got only one of them to live.”

The Redemption of Callie and Kayden Sorensen Jessica 9780751552614 Books Reviews
I really love these characters and the story line. They struggle through their problems and persevere and grow though the process. There was a lot I loved about this book, but it just needed to have so much more. There were many area in the story that were drug out and repetitive and then the important parts were just glossed over.
**Spoiler**
I was disappointed that there is no confrontation with Caleb, he just disappears. Then the same this happened with Kayden's family, they just disappear with no confrontation or closure. I am OK with the Luke stuff being left up in the air, since he is getting his own story, but I am assuming this is the last book that is going to be written in Callie and Kayden's POV. I am sure we will see more of them and learn more in the next book, but it wont be the same since it will be focused on Luke and Violet's stories.
I just don't understand why the author wasted so many great opportunists to make the story more intense and so much better.
I also did not appreciate how long we had to wait for this book to come out. It seems to be very common for authors to write multiple series simultaneously. I don't understand why they don't finish one series and then start the next one, so the readers are not left waiting so long between books. The story really looses something when they are so far apart. I was confusing this book with another one that I read a while ago and it took me a while to sort the two out and get back into the story and the characters.
**spoilers**
It was a good book, but it had the potential to be great, and I wish it would have lived up to that potential.
Anytime I pick up a Jessica Sorensen novel I know that I need to have a few things handy time (because I'm not going to want to stop reading), my phone (so I can text Courtney with my angsty angst fest), and alcohol (to help me cope with the emotions). The Redemption of Callie and Kayden was no different. I had all three of my requirements at my disposal and I used them. Haha! This! Yes. That is the required arsenal, though no EtOH on my part...(Sorry. Just worked a detox unit this week...that's alcohol.)
It's true that the horror of their stories was revealed in the first book and that was painful. This book deals with the aftermath. It was hard to read sometimes, not because of the writing but because I wanted to get to the resolution, I wanted my happy and it took a while to get there. I kept a keen eye on the %...because I was so wary of what lay ahead. I was nervous as hell...and to be honest...that is why it has taken me ages to read this next installment.
Kayden and Callie both worry, a lot, about how their decisions have negatively impacted the other. They are very much in their heads..withholding their fears and worries to protect the other. While this sort of drives me apes*** crazy, and I'd love for them to spill their guts early and often, I also understand their reticence. They love each other enough to want the best. They know that not having the other one will be crushing, but they are willing to walk away if it means the other one will live a healthier, happier life. Problem with that, though, is that they want and need each other so badly that not being with each other..it won't do. This killlllled. Why do we do this to ourselves. Please, I would like to know. But then flip that over and put yourself in their shoes. Their lives have been in the darkest pits of hell horrible for them...and I just can't understand their motivations simply because I don't share those experiences. The writing made my stomach hurt, my heart speed up...made me kind of sweat a little bit...waiting. Waiting for that one thing to happen that we all were worrying about. My heart broke when it did...and it is nice to have somewhat of an anti-hero in this series to be the one that needs saving. And if I didn't use that particular word correctly, Shel, I apologize.
Thankfully, between Luke and Seth, Kallie gathers her strength and begins to take the hard steps of opening herself up to Kayden. She tries to break through his barriers and show him how much she cares. With her persistence, he finally starts coming around and that's when things begin to fall into place for them. Luke and Seth were the biggest surprises of all. Okay, Seth...I take that back. He's been awesome from the beginning and is so self-assured...but Luke really surprised me and I suddenly realized...Hey. Luke. Violet + Luke. The next book. *mind blown* I'm slow. I apologize. I can't wait for the next books!
This novel is not action packed with major revelations but it is emotional and engaging. I'm very interested in Luke's story which is coming up on our list very soon. We can't help but binge of Jessica Sorensen. When we read one, we have to read three or four. Luckily her list is growing at the speed of light (she is a rock star writer!) and we have plenty to choose from!
