(No. 11 in the Liturgical Mystery series) Police Chief Hayden Konig is right at home in his little mountain town of St. Germaine, North Carolina. As a detective, he's first rate. As the organist and choir director at St. Barnabas Church, he is par excellence. But, as a crime writer, he's a far cry from his hard-boiled hero, Raymond Chandler. Still, he is not deterred. Why should he be? He owns Mr. Chandler's typewriter.

It's Ash Wednesday, and with the season of Lent and St. Patrick's Day just around the corner, it seems the perfect time for the new Lutheran-pastor-turned-Episcopal-priest to put her own stamp on the worship style of St. Barnabas. After all, what could possibly go wrong? With a dead body and a kidnapping to sort out, Hayden doesn't have much time to worry about the Reverend Rosemary Pepperpot-Cohosh. Maybe he should.

I have, and love, all the Liturgical Mysteries. As with any series, some are better than others. However, I think it's important to bear in mind that with a series that's so character-driven as this one is, sometimes the 'story' takes a backseat to the characters. Whether that's a good thing or not is up to one's individual taste. This book is one that has more focus on the characters and their lives than on the 'mystery'. That said, while I enjoyed it very much, it definitely was not one of the top books in this series.

I very much enjoyed the chance to visit with my old friends in St. Germaine again and see what they had been up to since the last book. All the usual cast of characters were present and accounted for in full zaniness. The mystery was there for Hayden to solve, but it wasn't front-and-center. I did feel, though, that the background information on the characters, town, church, etc. was getting a little repetitious. I fully understand that the author is trying to make these stand-alone books so that a potential reader does not have to read them in order to understand and appreciate the characters - but for those who DID start with the first book and read through the series in order, it becomes tedious after a while. That said, this was still a fun read and could stand on its own for someone new to the series. Recommended.

Note on Kindle formatting: Excellent, as are all the books in the series. I noted no issues.

The Treble Wore Trouble The Liturgical Mysteries Book 11 edition by Mark Schweizer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Liturgical Mystery series by Mark Schweizer is a reliable delight, every book is guaranteed to make me smile. I really love the "Chandleresque" stories the main character writes within the larger book, and the eccentric cast of characters in the town. The children are particularly fun! Then there is the ever hopeful dog, and the not-quite-a-pet owl...really, how can you miss?

This is a series I turn to when I want something light, fun, entertaining, and even a little thought provoking. The mysteries are almost secondary to the story of this small town and its inhabitants...indeed the murder in this book took place several chapters in. I have enjoyed them all, and will continue to look forward to each new installment. Highly recommended!
I love St. Germaine, North Carolina. I only wish it really existed. Truffle pigs from France, pizza made with truffles. Owls, dogs. Typewriters and hats. Surprising death of one of the stand by characters. This liturgical mystery has it all. I laughed, and I cried. Loved the quotation of Mr. Gawthrops beautiful song, "Sing Me to Heaven." I shouldn't be greedy and expect Mr. Schweizer to sit at his typewriter all day, every day, just to fulfill my desire to read about the next murder in St. Germaine (where you come to shop, and stay for the murders). Hats off to Mark Schweizer on another little gem of a novel (that's Raymond Chanler's hat). Keep 'em coming and I'll keep buying and reading them.
If you thought -- as I did -- that Mark Schweizer had run out of stories to tell about Hayden Konig and the other denizens of St. Germaine, North Carolina -- you'd be wrong. A couple of novels ago, he appeared to tie up all of his narratives with a bow, having presumably run out of voice parts to mine as title material. But -- and this is NOT a complaint -- the stories continue. First a Christmas story (without a murder!), and now this.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the first eight -- no, nine -- books, I wasn't sure at first whether to spring for the tenth. But in the end, I couldn't resist, and this time I bought the digital version and downloaded it to the app on my iPad. In the end, it's a very satisfying read. All of the required elements are there (and I'm not issuing any spoilers here) A dead body, an array of possible suspects for police chief Konig to interview, a new pastor with an unorthodox agenda that tries church organist Konig's patience, another of Konig's god-awful typewritten noir novels paralleling the main story, and all of your favorite characters (choir members, townspeople, preachers, mayors, coroners, etc.) from the past novels, inviting you to come spend some more time in St. Germaine with them. How can you resist? I can't.

At this point, I don't care any more whether the writing is good (though it is); I just want to see these characters again! They make the Liturgical Mysteries more fun than most TV sitcoms. I'd even venture to say that I wouldn't mind seeing them once a week, rather than most of what's on the tube these days. What say, Mr. Schweizer? Ready to write a TV pilot? Yeah, I'd watch it. In the meantime, I'll watch my inbox for news of an eleventh book.
It is not really possible to review a particular Liturgical Mystery because they all blend together. If you are looking for serious reading, forget this series, but like many mystery series that revolve around places, the story isn't in the mystery so much as the place and people. With this series you get the North Carolina mountains, and people who do really different things and mostly go to the same church. The lead character, the Episcopal Church organist is a music snob and the Sheriff of this small town. It makes great quick reading. You learn a little about classical music (esp as related to organ), church choir music, and some pretty realistic mountain folk, either Florida transplanted or local (or in this case from Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill). I love the movement from voice to voice, and a bit the alter ego stories....but mostly just the easy way of writing. The mystery part is always there, but don't think you will be frightened, just intrigued with how the mystery will be solved.
I have, and love, all the Liturgical Mysteries. As with any series, some are better than others.
