Tall Dark Heartless A Pyte/Sentinel Series Novel edition by RL Mathewson Paranormal Romance eBooks

Must admit I loved the first one, hated number two and found this one annoying. SPOILERS AHEAD

Is the author incapable of making strong female characters? I feel like all the female characters are weak, need to be taking care of and are pretty much baby making machines. Both Izzy and Madison are pregnant in this book with "crazy" pregnancy hormones. It almost feels that once their main story is done the only thing they're good for is being knocked up despite their enhanced supernatural abilities. I don't think I've read one book of Mathewson's where the heroine and hero were actually equals.

For instance in the second book, how is it that Chris was able to decide whether or not his sentinel mate went to the island? Shouldn't that have been Eric's decision as he is the compound leader? How does Chris get to decide her fate. Even when she was allowed to stay on as IT, how does he get a say in the stipulations for staying (making her do physical training), especially when we find out that not all mates love each other in this book. Does every male in the pair have say so on how the female lives their lives?

Then we have Danni. According to this book she also has been training all her life in combat for the sentinels. Even though she was human we get the sense early in the book that she kicks butt and all her other human fighters respect her. She trained initially with an 1,000 year old Pyte, Caine, and yet even after becoming a pyte, Chris can still take her... that makes no freaking sense. Yes Chris she definitely give her a workout but he should NOT be able to take her down by himself.

Finally, something happens and Izzy gets injured and months later she is still suffering from this horrible injury. This is confusing because don't sentinels have super healing? We know she has it as well because in Without Regrets, she broke her hand and it healed quickly. However in this book that ability seems to have disappeared and she is constantly heard crying somewhere.

Mmph. I really like R.L. Mathewson's books but I'm really getting tired of her heroines that are all talk but weak. Madison is only around to say that she's pregnant and complain about things without doing anything about it, Izzy is pregnant and just whines about junk food, Danni was supposed to be a badass but instead was once again a weak heroine in need of protecting. I'm going to start the next one but if it's the same lame heroine it's going to be a DNF for me.

Tall Dark Heartless A Pyte/Sentinel Series Novel edition by RL Mathewson Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

3-3.5 stars

This was a good story but I did have some mixed feelings about it. It seems that so far, the heroes in this series tend toward being real jerks but at least Caine isn't as bad as Chris (the hero from Book #2 who was the high king of all asshole-heroes) and had his attitude turn-around much sooner.

Danni is the human daughter of a pair of Sentinels that were (at best) absentee parents. Danni grew up without anyone because of her parents but when she was 7, she met Caine. Caine is a Pyte that was being held prisoner in the same location that Danni lived in. He was escaping his imprisonment when Danni came out and befriended him without giving him a choice. He was allowed to stay free and for the next 10 years, Danni and Caine were best friends.

Unfortunately, Danni's blood had always smelled particularly good to Caine and when she hit 17, it got to be too much. However, instead of being rational and explaining the issue to Danni, Caine dropped her like a hot-potato, going from her BFF to not even acknowledging that she existed. This crushed Danni and since she had no one else and Caine had been her whole world, she was left achingly alone with no clue why.

10 years down the road, Danni has tried to move on with her life and has trained hard to be the best at her job. Danni is human but she and some other human children of Sentinels form a team to help take out some of the easier missions in the fight against the dangerous paranormals. Danni's group is sent out on a mission but unfortunately, her Ex, Greg, was put in charge of the team and Caine is part of it as well. Things go to crap and Danni and Caine are imprisoned together because their captor wants something out of them. Caine and Danni are forced to work together and while Caine is able to feign disinterest in her for a while, eventually it comes out that he isn't as indifferent as he seems. But that doesn't keep him from being a complete prick about it, planning to leave Danni just as soon as he can and talking about sleeping with other women in front of her (doesn't happen though).

Thankfully, Caine does eventually realize he's been fooling himself and he'd never be able to leave her but then he has to convince Danni to trust him. Danni was crushed when Caine left her the fist time and no matter how much she wants him, she's not keen to give him a chance to crush her feelings again. Danni is a tough woman, a real warrior woman, but Caine gets to her and she doesn't like having a weakness. So there's imprisonment issue as well as some issues with the Sentinel council that also cause some angst. Things do turn out well in the end though, with Danni and Caine getting their HEA.

This was an enjoyable story, especially once Caine stopped being a major jerk (around 2/3s in). I would gladly have kicked him in the balls at first but I liked him much more in the end. Danni was a really good heroine, I'm just sorry she has an ongoing health issue hanging over her head (that part is just...weird). Although my dislike for Caine in the beginning, tainted my enjoyment of the beginning of the story a bit, I did like it more as the story progressed, I did consider giving it 4 stars but my feelings were still just a bit too mixed for that so it gets a high 3 star rating. While I do think the author is a good writer, I don't think I'll be continuing with the next book. )

* note - I listened to the audio version of the story and the narrator did a really good job.
