In a sleepy logging town in Newfoundland, Canada, Sasha Dovonovitch and Tom Claireborne, two young teenagers, fall in love. Sasha’s father, a brutal man, struggles to keep them apart, even as the town bully, Jamie Dence, takes an obsessive interest in her. While local logging strikes foment unrest, Jamie is found murdered. The town keeps the details secret, and it is only decades later that an old friend of the families finally discovers the unsettling truth.
“A few days after Bonfire Night, Cindy organised a game of Kick-the-Can in her backyard with those of us who had been at her party. And later that evening, having hidden while Tom, the It, was meant to be seeking everyone out, I came running around the corner of the house to strike home when suddenly I stopped, for there, beneath the shimmering porch light, I found them kissing — two small silhouettes, holding each other awkwardly, against the Atlantic autumn cold.”

Really a fine piece of writing. Pretty densely-packed prose, so not exactly some simple summer reading. For those of us interested in more than just the socialites in big cities, I found it an interesting look at small-town Canadian life, with a story dramatic enough to keep you interested. But this work is clearly more about the quality of the writing than the plot. The writing technique reminded me of Henry James sometimes, with deep sentences which require the intellectual effort reserved for weighty writers, but what struck me most were the repeatedly exceptional metaphors. Some swings and misses, sure, but I found myself re-reading the good ones and thinking about them later - that's the mark of good writing. Or at least original thought, which is in short supply these days. And yesterday, too, now that I think about it. Overall, it was nice to read a current writer whose style is serious and considered, and doesn't rely on shock value and empty sizzle.Product details

Bear Lake edition by William Prendiville Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A really enjoyable read, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. The writing is clear and the characters are entirely believable, it transports the reader to small town Canada, the people, even the mosquitoes and the weather! On one side you suffer with them and also you shudder at the viciousness of the villain. On the whole a very satisfying book, I can't wait for the next one from William Prendiville!
Bear Lake is a a heartbreaking story of desperation and tragedy in a failing logging town. The descriptions of Bear Lake but more particularly the teenagers who are at the heart of this story are vivid and engaging. It was an enjoyable read cover to cover.
