I enjoyed this cute romance. This was a quick comfy easy read. I was instantly pulled into the story, and my interest was held through out the entire book. What I enjoyed most was the decision that Eliza made and how it sends a great message to younger readers.

Life Liberty and Pursuit was a cute, clean fun contemporary read. 4 out of 5 stars
It was a cute YA romance but I wasn't feeling the love at first sight relationship between David and Eliza. It was cute how they met (he rescues her) but to fall in love in 4 days? Then they have the challenge of having a long distance relationship.

The ending felt inconclusive. This is the kind of book where I expect there to be an epilogue but there wasn't. I was actually expecting there to be one.
As a writer, I have to be discerning about the books I spend time reading. I love to get comfy with a good book as much as the next person, but I simply don't have the time to devote to the mediocre. Life, Liberty and Pursuit, though, was most definitely not a waste of time. The unlikely shipboard romance of David and Eliza kept me guessing, empathizing, and cheering, while the vivid descriptions made me feel like I was traveling alongside the two of them. I enjoyed the life-like dialogue and the pace of the story, even as fate forced their paths to diverge.

The writing and the characters weren't the only things that won me over. As a former English teacher, I'm always on the lookout for books with a compelling story without vulgarity and promiscuity around every corner. David and Eliza carefully and realistically navigate the waters of temptation, making difficult and heartrending choices, because they're grounded and intelligent young people. I can wholeheartedly recommend this debut novel to anyone who wants to cozy up and enjoy a great love story. It will make you smile again and again.
Susan Kaye Quinn has created a warm, wet world in her debut novel Life, Liberty, and Pursuit. Eliza and David meet when he rescues her from falling into a swimming pool, and they continue to have cruise ship adventures on their whirlwind romance until they're faced with the saddening prospect of a long-distance relationship. Susan keeps the reader in suspense the entire novel about what choices Eliza and David will make in navigating their murky future.

At first I thought "Here we go again with another wimpy damsel in distress" but I was very pleasantly surprised when Eliza proves her own mettle by rescuing David right back. They throw out a metaphorical life raft to each other, not only to save a life but also to save liberty and pursuit. I thoroughly enjoyed how their love and support enabled each to develop and to reach new heights. They became stronger individuals as a result of their union. As the character Nicholas states on page 191, "That's what love is supposed to be like. It's supposed to make you better." I couldn't agree more. A wonderful read!
Eliza's headed to Princeton for college. David's headed to Chicago for Navy boot camp. Both are trying to be good sports on a farewell cruise with their families, and then Splash! Eliza falls in a pool and is rescued by David.

Mutual sparks fly, and they spend the rest of the voyage together, having dinner, visiting ports of call, wandering around the decks holding hands. It's all wonderful and romantic. But the reality is they'll say goodbye in three days and head to opposite sides of the country.

So the cruise ends, and true confession I wasn't sure how Quinn was going to keep the momentum going with more than half the story left. But she does a wonderful job building tension into the romance through David & Eliza's thoughts, fears, and long-distance communications.

I was so excited when Eliza got her first letter from David (he has restricted communication at basic training and they actually have to write letters--gasp!), I had to read what he wrote twice. Just like Eliza.

And I gotta hand it to Quinn. She crafts a fantastic love letter.

Seriously, she does a super job establishing the relationship between these characters and then seeing it through their initial separation and to their ultimate outcome.

The outcome is tricky as well because as Eliza prepares for Princeton, her best friend gets ready to leave for college in the same city where David is assigned (Monterrey Bay, Cal.). Eliza begins to doubt her lifelong dream of getting an Ivy League education in favor of switching schools to be with her new love.

So realistic. So emotional. I couldn't decided what I wanted Eliza to do.

Quinn handles this challenge masterfully in the book, and ultimately, I found the resolution of the story very satisfying. The secondary characters are a lot of fun, too, and exploring the tidbits of David's Polish background, Navy basic training, even the different ports of call are great enhancements to the story.
It's a sweet story. It's tough to tell whether it will be an ending a la Nicholas Sparks or Nora Roberts. I expected a little more suspense, but it's sweet stroll down first love memory lane.
Life, Liberty and Pursuit is a sweet tale about first love that is also true love. Teens and adults will enjoy the ups and downs of Eliza and David's romance, especially with such genuine characters facing real life situations. This positive and upbeat story is a refreshing change!
This sweet story of first love brought a smile to my face and sent my heart racing more than a few times. Quinn manages to capture the intense yearning of young love and infuses her romantic scenes with ample amounts of sizzle. I seriously needed a shower after a few of those passages!
